Omega 3 Krill Oil —
Is it Better than Fish Oil?

The benefits of omega 3 krill oil come from the many different nutrients in krill: enzymes, phytochemicals, amino acids, omega 3 fatty acids, minerals and antioxidants. Omega 3 krill oil may be a better way to get omega 3 EPA and DHA than fish oil. It has all the same benefits, but with several distinct advantages.

Advantages of Omega 3 Krill Oil
over Fish, and Fish Oil

Because of the toxicity problems with seafood, taking omega 3 krill oil supplements make sense. They'll give you all of the benefits of eating fish without the downside of consuming excessive amounts of toxins found in fish, such as pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, mercury and dioxins. And krill oil benefits exceed those of fish oil supplements in several ways:

  • krill oil has better absorption — it may be as much as 10 to 15 times the rate of fish oil — so you can take a much lower dose
  • krill oil contains choline, an important nutrient for brain development, learning and memory
  • krill oil is naturally pollution-free; they're at the bottom of the food chain and are harvested in the pristine seas around Antarctica
  • fish oil spoils very easily; in fact, experts will tell you that many of the fish oil supplements on the store shelf are already rancid. Krill is more resistant to oxidation and stays fresh longer because it contains the antioxidant astaxanthin, which protects the krill oil from oxidation
  • krill has no fishy aftertaste and doesn't cause belching like some fish oils do

Krill oil benefits also include antioxidant protection not available in fish oil. The antioxidant capacity of omega 3 krill oil is 48 times higher than fish oil. Krill oil has been found to contain over 300 times the antioxidant power of vitamin A and vitamin E and over 34 times the antioxidant power of coenzyme Q-10.

The one thing that omega krill oil doesn't have over fish oil is an extensive collection of studies to back up its effectiveness. In any case, adding either one of these supplements — or even both — to your diet would be a wise thing to do.

What are Krill, Anyway?

Krill are tiny marine animals that are one of the best sources for essential fatty acids. Krill oil supplements include the same well-known omega 3 fats that you get from fish — EPA and DHA — as well as other beneficial nutrients.

Krill are very small shrimp-like crustaceans that form a critical part of the marine food chain. They are the primary food for great whales, the world's largest animals. A blue whale eats up to four tons of krill every day during feeding season. Together with plankton, krill make up the largest biomass on earth — making them one of the most easily renewable food resources available.

The Benefits of
Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fats play a crucial role in the functioning and health of many different parts of your body. These include, most notably, your brain and your heart. In fact, a significant portion of your brain and heart tissue is comprised of omega 3 fats. Both omega 3 and omega 6 fats are found in the membranes of every cell in your body!

Typical modern-day diets are usually lacking in omega 3 fats. Instead, we're consuming lots of omega 6 fats, largely through vegetable oils like corn and soy. An imbalance of omega 3 and omega 6 in the diet leads to inflammation, which contributes to the onset of degenerative diseases. Omega 3 supplements like krill oil can help to restore the balance.

Cold-water fish are, by far, the richest dietary source of omega 3 fats. Unfortunately, most seafood today is contaminated with dangerous toxins like mercury, dioxins and PCBs, antibiotics and hormones. The FDA has warned consumers not to eat fish too often due to the levels of mercury present; they recommend that, for many species, one serving a month is all that is safe!

Specific Benefits of Omega 3 Krill Oil

Krill oil provides a wide variety of benefits:

  • increase in joint comfort
  • protection for cell membranes
  • improved blood lipid health

  • healthier liver function

How Much Krill Oil Should You Take?

Be consistent — supplement with a high-quality omega 3 krill oil (or fish oil) daily. If you eat at least two seafood servings a week and have no pressing health concerns, follow the dosage instructions on the bottle's label. If you have health issues that could benefit from additional krill oil benefits, you may want to take more — maybe twice the recommended dose. Any higher dose should be used only under a healthcare provider's supervision.

Because of krill oil's much better absorption, you can use a much lower dose than you would with regular fish oils.
