Omega 3 Benefits
Work in Every Part of Your Body

Omega 3 benefits play a crucial role in the functioning and health of many different parts of your body. These include, most notably, your brain and your heart. In fact, a significant portion of your brain and heart tissue is comprised of omega 3 fats.

Omega 3 benefits also promote the health of your skin, joints and hair, as well as your immune system. Omega 3 fats have been found to be critical for normal growth and development in children.

When you examine the list of benefits attributed to omega 3 fats, it's easy to see why they are quickly becoming one of the most researched topics in the scientific community — and one of the supplements most often recommended by health practitioners. Omega 3 supplements have been shown to have a wide range of health benefits, including:

  • improved brain function
  • improved blood sugar health
  • increased joint comfort
  • reduced inflammation throughout your body

  • improved skin, hair and nails
  • lower LDL, higher HDL cholesterol
  • relief of normal PMS symptoms
  • stronger immune system

  • improved mental state
  • maintain the fluidity of cell membranes
  • reduce the risk of becoming obese
  • help prevent cancer cell growth

Omega 3 Benefits
and Disease Prevention

Because of their powerful ability to reduce inflammation, omega 3’s have been linked with the prevention and treatment of a whole host of health problems, including:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • arthritis
  • osteoporosis

  • Alzheimer’s
  • lupus
  • multiple sclerosis
  • ADHD
  • asthma
  • migraine headaches

Skin Conditions. The benefits of omega 3 fats include improving all types of skin conditions, providing relief for ailments such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. The anti-inflammatory properties of omega 3 also minimize the damage caused to your skin due to overexposure to the sun.

Depression and Mental Conditions. Omega 3 fats are excellent mood lifters, helping to alleviate depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ADD and ADHD. In fact, the evidence has become so compelling that some experts in the field are encouraging anyone suffering from depression to get an adequate intake of omega 3 fats.

Promoting Healthy Cell Membranes and Cancer Prevention. Every cell in your body is surrounded by a cell membrane composed mainly of fatty acids. The cell membrane's primary job is to allow nutrients to enter the cell, and ensures that waste products are removed quickly.

To perform these functions optimally, the cell membrane must maintain its integrity and fluidity. Because cell membranes are made up of fat, the health of your cell membranes is determined in large part by the type of fat we eat. Diets rich in omega 3 fats have been found to produce healthier cell membranes.

Cells without a healthy membrane lose their ability to hold water and vital nutrients, and lose their ability to communicate with other cells. Researchers believe that this loss of intercellular communication leads to the growth of cancerous tumors.

Animal studies have already demonstrated that a high-omega 3 diet can slow tumor growth, and people following a Mediterranean diet (rich in omega 3’s) have been found to be much less likely to develop cancer. This includes the most common types of cancer: breast, colon, and prostate cancers.

Cardiovascular Problems. Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA encourage the manufacture of prostaglandins responsible for dilating blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure and preventing heart conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis. The anti-inflammatory properties of fish oils containing EPA and DHA help reduce the tenderness, pain and stiffness of joints associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Allergies and Asthma. Studies show that increased omega 3 intake by mothers during pregnancy may protect babies against the development of allergies. Omega 3 fats also protect against symptoms of hay fever, sinus infections, asthma, food allergies and allergic skin conditions such as hives and eczema.

Omega 3 Benefits
and Women's Health

From menstrual cramps to menopausal symptoms, infertility and breast cancer, omega 3’s have been shown to benefit women of all ages. Here are some specific examples:

Infertility and Premature Birth. When pregnant women increase their omega 3 intake, the risk of premature births are up to 50 percent less frequent. Fetal brain development also benefits from omega 3 supplementation. Mothers who supplement with omega 3 also lower their risk of postpartum depression.

Omega 3 Benefits and Menopause. Omega 3 fatty acids can help many of the issues related to menopause. Low blood levels of omega 3’s are associated with inflammation, which is the underlying cause behind many health problems associated with menopause — osteoporosis, heart disease, vaginal dryness, thinning skin and hair, and joint pain, to name some of the more familiar ones. Omega 3’s can help reduce this inflammation. Omega 3 benefits may be one of the reasons why Japanese women, whose diets are rich in fish, seaweed and soy, have fewer menopausal problems than American women do.

Omega 3 Benefits and Menstrual Discomfort. Scientists have found a correlation between increased menstrual pain and low omega 3 concentrations in the blood.
