Are They Your Best Option?
This month, I've added new sections to antioxidants-for-health-and-longevity.com on hemp, chia and flax seeds, the most popular plant-based sources of omega 3 fats. Discover the pros and cons of each one, and whether or not you can rely on omega 3-fortified products for your daily requirement of essential fats.
It's the Flu Season Again!
How to Be Prepared.
The campaign to vaccinate virtually everyone in America with a flu shot this year is well under way. Vaccine manufacturers are making up to 165 million doses of flu vaccine; the most ever. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is urging all Americans over 6 months of age to get vaccinated.
Can you trust the CDC's reporting on the flu?
The CDC has traditionally released statistics of flu-related illnesses and deaths, but they've admitted that those numbers were just "estimates" —not confirmed cases. As it turns out, these figures are grossly exaggerated. The truth is that the CDC uses those numbers as a tactic to frighten you into getting vaccinated flu shots.
The CDC is essentially acting as a business partner of the pharmaceutical industry — and make no mistake, profit is a key component of their campaign, maybe even more so than protecting the public. In light of all this, you can't trust the CDC or any other government agency to be honest with you on the wisdom of getting flu shots.
Although health authorities maintain that flu vaccines are safe and effective, increasing evidence shows that this may not be the case at all. Repeatedly, serious side effects from vaccines are overlooked or dismissed as being “coincidental.” It is important to know that only a tiny fraction of vaccine reactions are actually reported, so the true number of injuries, side effects, and even deaths, are far more than the official statistics indicate.
This year's flu shot will be a 3-in-1 combination, a new formulation that includes last year's H1N1. This same flu shot has already been used in Australia, where vaccinations were suspended for all children under the age of five, after 23 children were hospitalized with convulsions following their vaccinations. Read about it here: Australian Vaccination Ban
The Truth About Flu Vaccines
Long-term effects of frequent vaccinations are unknown. No vaccine is without side effects, including injury and death. Double-blind studies have never been done on long-term effects or safety of vaccines — or even if they actually work!
What about the evidence that supports vaccine effectiveness? The November 2009 issue of the Atlantic magazine contains an excellent article examining the studies that are being used by the CDC to reinforce the effectiveness of flu vaccines.
Tom Jefferson, from the Cochrane Collaboration, one of the world's top researchers on the flu vaccine, is interviewed for the story. He leads a team of researchers who have examined hundreds of vaccine studies. According to Jefferson,
"The vast majority of the studies were deeply flawed.
Rubbish is not a scientific term, but I think it's the term
that applies (to these studies)."

The current status of vaccine studies. The gist of the argument at this point is that, at first, government officials declare that vaccines are effective. When faced with contrary evidence, proponents acknowledge that the science is not as clear as they would like. Then, in response to calls for placebo-controlled trials, which would provide clear evidence one way or the other, the proponents balk, saying that such studies would deprive patients of vaccines and drugs that have already been deemed effective.
The end result is that no studies about the
real effectiveness and long-term safety of vaccinations
are being done at all.
More Truths About Vaccines
I have a couple of vaccine-related articles on my website. the first is one I wrote during last year's H1N1 panic. It contains much information that's still relevant for this year's vaccination program: Swine Flu Vaccine Revelations
My website also has an interview with Dr. Lawrence B. Palevsky, M.D., a pediatric physician with an orthodox medical school education. Dr Palevsky has done intensive study and independent research into vaccine science and shares the truth about vaccines in this interview.
The information he offers will clear up much of your doubt and confusion about what to believe and who to trust about vaccinating your children, or yourself.

What's Your Best Plan
for Protecting Yourself This Flu Season?
There are far more effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu this winter.
The number one strategy for avoiding infections of all kinds, including the flu, is to optimize your vitamin D levels. Now that summer is gone in the northern hemisphere, your body can't produce vitamin D from the sun any more. The Vitamin D Council recommends supplementing with about 1,000IU of vitamin D for every 30 pounds of body weight, per day, during the winter months.
Vitamin D shows such a powerful effect in preventing influenza -- it's as much as 8 times more effective than vaccines! Vitamin D deficiency is why winter is the flu season, more than any other factor. Vitamin D is a critical component in the strength of your immune system Yet, you won't ever hear the CDC recommending vitamin D as an alternative to vaccination!
I've devoted an entire section of my website to the topic of Vitamin D and all of its benefits. Check it out here: Vitamin D
Other Tips to Strengthen
Your Immune System Naturally.
- Eliminate sugar and processed foods from your diet.
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Exercise frequently.
- Wash your hands frequently with plain soap. Studies have found that soap and water work better than the waterless, alcohol-based hand wipes.
Don't use an antibacterial soap. Many scientists fear that the widespread use of antibacterial soaps and other disinfectants may be contributing to the rise in "superbugs" that are resistant to modern medicines. In addition, the active ingredient in many antibacterial products, triclosan, can be toxic.
Vegetarian Sources of Omega 3 Fats
You've probably seen the phrase “Good source of omega 3” on the labels of all types of food products in your grocery store. Supermarkets are now carrying a wide range of products that promote their added omega 3 content as a health benefit. Everything from mayonnaise to cereal to eggs can be found with these fats added in.
However, I wouldn't recommend relying on these products for your omega 3 requirements. This is more of a marketing ploy than it is an actual health benefit; the amounts of omega 3 are frequently so small that they're insignificant. I'll show you how to find the best sources of omega 3's right here.
If you didn't know, omega 3 fatty acids are probably the most important fats for your health because they help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is a primary cause of many of the degenerative diseases so common today — heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimers, arthritis, and more. An ever-growing number of studies have demonstrated the amazing health benefits of omega 3 fats.
Are Vegetarian Sources of
Omega 3 Reliable?
Plant-based sources of omega 3 fats include flax, chia and hemp seeds; these are all rich in omega 3 alpha linolenic acid (ALA). This omega 3 fat is a precursor to the forms of omega 3 found in fish oils, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Current research indicates that EPA and DHA provide many more omega 3 benefits than ALA.
ALA is actually converted into EPA and DHA in your body, but only in very small amounts, and only when sufficient enzymes are present. This does not mean that vegetarian omega 3 fats are not beneficial; they should be consumed as part of a well-balanced diet. However, relying exclusively on plant-based sources of omega 3s does not offer the benefits of marine-based sources.
The best vegetarian omega 3 foods include:
- chia seeds
- hempseed and hemp oil
- flaxseed and flax oil
- canola oil
- pumpkin seeds
- broccoli and cauliflower
- brussels sprouts
- dark green leafy vegetables

My Personal Recommendation
Unless you are a strict vegetarian, I recommend getting your omega 3s from animal sources. Cold-water fish are, by far, the richest dietary source of omega 3 fats. Unfortunately, most seafood today is contaminated with dangerous toxins like mercury, dioxins and PCBs, antibiotics and hormones. Farm-raised fish are considerably more toxic than wild-caught varieties.
Today, 80 percent of the seafood sold in America is imported, much of it from third world nations such as China, Vietnam and the Philippines, all of which tend to have poor food safety standards.
The Food and Drug Administration,
which is charged with supervision of food safety,
inspects less than one percent of the
nation’s imported seafood.
In most cases, consumption of more than one farmed salmon meal per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks! Although this was just one study, you'd have to assume that many other varieties of fish have an equal amount of toxins.
The truly safest and most effective way to get your omega 3 fats are omega 3 supplements such as fish oil or krill oil. These supplements are purified by molecular distillation to ensure that the product is free of mercury and other contaminants.
