October is GMO Awareness Month
How knowledgeable are you when it comes to genetically-modified foods? Although the majority of Americans say that they don't want GM foods, the truth is that you're probably consuming foods with GM ingredients in them already. The USA is one of only a handful of western countries that currently allow GM technology to be used in producing its food supply — European countries have banned its use altogether.
Arguments Made for the Use of GMO
The arguments made for the use of GM agriculture include claims such as:
1. GM technology will save the population of third-world countries from starvation.
2. It will produce greater crop yields and more profits for farmers.
3. It will reduce the use of pesticides.
4. It will produce more nutritious food.
5. GM technology has been tested and demonstrated to be completely safe.
In addition, the biotech industry insists that there is essentially no difference between GM produce and conventional produce, so labeling foods as GM isn't necessary, and would only "confuse" the consumer.
These claims of the superiority of GM technology are widely promoted by big biotech firms like Monsanto, who stand to profit enormously if they can push their GM agenda through. These companies typically have a terrible history of toxic contamination and public deception. GM technology gives them patents that will allow them to control the world’s food supply, which is their true goal.
What about the research that shows the benefits of GMO? Jeffrey Smith, best-selling author and the leading spokesperson on the health dangers of GMOs, reveals
how big biotech companies rig the research on GM foods.
What Were the FDA's Conclusions About GM Foods? The overwhelming consensus among the FDA’s own scientists was that GM foods were quite different and could lead to unpredictable and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. However, the FDA scientists who had urged superiors to require long-term studies were ignored.
Documented Results of Using GM Agriculture
GM food technology has now been in use for about 30 years, enough time to assess some actual real-world results. What does the data show about the claims being made in support of genetically-modified agriculture?
GM foods won’t solve the food crisis. A 2008 World Bank report concluded that increased biofuel production (crops grown for fuel rather than food) is the major cause of the increase in food prices.
GM has not increased the yield potential of any commercialized crops. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soy, has suffered reduced yields.
GM crops have produced an overall increase, not decrease, in pesticide and herbicide use compared to conventional crops. American farmers’ overuse of the weedkiller Roundup has led to the rapid growth of tenacious new superweeds. To fight them, farmers are being forced to spray fields with even more toxic herbicides.
GM foods have not been shown to be safe. GMOs have been approved without adequate safety studies.
Eating genetically modified (GM) foods may cause disease and infertility. There are many reports about livestock having a variety of illnesses, including reproductive problems, when fed genetically modified feed.
GM crops are a long-term economic disaster for farmers. GM seed prices in America have increased dramatically, cutting average farm incomes for U.S. farmers growing GM crops.
GM crops cross-pollinate and spread into the environment, contaminating other non-GM crops. Realistically speaking, there's no way to quarantine GM plants from any others.
What is Being Done — and What Can You Do?
The current Obama administration is unfortunately turning out to be just as pro-GMO as the preceding Bush and Clinton ones, filling the USDA and other government bureaucracies with Monsanto supporters.
The current USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, was named "Biotech Governor of the Year" in 2001. Vilsack, notorious for flying around in a Monsanto company jets, is now busy trying to get the court-ordered ban on GM alfalfa lifted. The new czar of Food Safety, Michael Taylor is a former vice president of Monsanto. There are others as well.
The only way for us to stop the spread of GM technology is for the buying public to reject GM products. This is what happened in Europe, and it's the main reason why the industry is fighting to defeat legislation that would require GM foods to be labeled as such. Keeping you, the consumer, in the dark is their strategy to push their agenda through.
You can fight back by educating yourself about GM foods and boycotting all products that use GM ingredients. The best place to get information is the website of Jeffrey Smith's Institute for Responsible Technology

Get Your Antioxidants the Easy Way!
Do you struggle to get enough fruits and vegetables into your daily routine? Do you have kids who just won't eat these essential foods? There's a fast, easy and delicious way to guarantee that you and your kids get an ample supply of antioxidants every day. I suggest you look into using any one of several great superfood powders to make delicious "milk shakes" that contain an entire day's worth of antioxidants in just one glass.
If you don't like the taste of dark green leafy vegetables or you just don't have the time or inclination to get them into your meals every day, green superfood powders are the solution. Just one scoop of powder mixed in with a glass of almond milk makes an instant green smoothie without having to use a high-end blender. Adding a protein powder like Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein will make it a complete meal if you'd like.
There are many different brands of green superfood powders to choose from; you really can't go wrong from a nutritional aspect. I recommending starting with the best tasting ones. After all, if your smoothie doesn't taste great, you'll be less inclined to have one every day.
The Amazing Grass Company makes some of the most delicious varieties of green superfood powders around. They make superfood powders that come in flavors like chocolate, berry and pomegranate mango. You won't believe anything that tastes this good could be loaded with green vegetables!
Nutiva Organic HempShakes contain superfoods such as hemp, blueberries, pomegranates, açai and goji berries — foods that are rich not only in protein but in minerals, antioxidants, and healthful fatty acids.
Nutiva's HempShakes contain two kinds of fiber and as little as only three grams of sugar. Just mix into your favorite milk beverage for an instant high-protein superfood shake!

The mission of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is to protect the public from harm due to toxic contaminants. Their website has lots of great information that will help you identify the threats from toxins in your environment. Their website and newsletter make it easy for you to voice your opinion on environmental issues to your congressman and other policy-makers.
The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is a grassroots, non-profit public interest organization that promotes and supports organic agriculture and addresses issues related to it, including food safety, food politics and GM technology.
The OCA is actively working to stop Monsanto from spreading GM agriculture around the world and gaining control of the world food supply.
You can sign up here to support their campaign, Millions Against Monsanto.
The Institute for Responsible Technology is a world leader in educating policy makers and the public about genetically modified (GM) foods and crops. Founded in 2003 by international bestselling author and GMO expert Jeffrey Smith, the IRT works to mobilize citizens, organizations, healthcare professionals and the media to discover the truth about GM foods.
