The Dr. Oz Show presents:
The #1 Supplement You've Never Heard of
That You Should Be Taking
Recently, Dr. Joseph Mercola, owner of the most popular alternative health site on the internet, made a rare television appearance on the Dr. Oz Show. Although I personally don't care for the daytime-television theatrics often on display there, I have to give Dr. Oz credit for inviting controversial alternative health practitioners on his show and allowing them the opportunity to share their viewpoints, rather than trying to discredit and ridicule them. It's more typical of the mainstream establishment to condemn people like Dr. Mercola because they so often disagree with so-called "science-based medicine."
Here's a sample of the type of venomous accusations usually reserved for Dr. Mercola by the medical establishment, from a website on "science-based medicine":
"A couple of weeks ago, I criticized Dr. Mehmet Oz (a.k.a. “America’s doctor”) for not only hosting a man I consider to be a major supporter of quackery, but going far beyond that to defend and promote him. After that, I considered Dr. Oz to be a lost cause, with nothing to excuse him for his having embraced a man whose website is a wretched hive of scum and quackery almost as wretched as NaturalNews.com (in my opinion, of course). Unfortunately, apparently Dr. Oz’s defense of Dr. Mercola was only the beginning of the end of whatever minimal credibility Dr. Oz had left as a practitioner of evidence-based medicine." Whoa!
Personally, whenever I hear that type of comment, it makes me more curious about the target of the attack and what their views are. In this case, I was already very familiar with Dr. Mercola and consider his website to be the most useful and accurate source for alternative health information anywhere. He's not afraid of taking on Big Pharma or anyone else that he believes is conspiring against your health. I highly recommend that you visit the mercola website and subscribe to his newsletter. I can also say the same for Mike Adams at the aforementioned NaturalNews. In my opinion, we need brave souls like these guys to stand up to the food and pharmaceutical industries that care more about their profits than they do your health.
On the Dr. Oz show, Dr. Mercola talked about many different topics; one segment was devoted to "The #1 Supplement You've Never Heard of That You Should Be Taking." That supplement is called astaxanthin.
You can access the entire Dr. Oz/Dr. Joe Mercola segment from a link on the iHerb website. (The segment on astaxanthin is Part 4).
What is Astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a natural pigment known as carotenoid, a category of antioxidants. Astaxanthin may not only be nature's most powerful antioxidant, but also its most versatile as well, with a list of benefits that is virtually endless.
Several factors help explain this:
- Astaxanthin can reach into every part of the cell, inside and out
- Astaxanthin can cross the blood-brain barrier to protect the brain and nervous system.
- Astaxanthin can cross the blood-retinal barrier and bring protection to the eyes.
- Astaxanthin works in every part of your body, organs and skin.
Benefits of Astaxanthin for Inflammation
Inflammation is your body's response against infection, and the mechanism it uses for repairing injured tissue. When a virus attacks your cells, your inflammatory system kicks in to fight it off. If you sprain an ankle, your inflammatory system works to repair the damage. Other examples of inflammation include the swelling from arthritis and sunburn.
"Silent" Inflammation Underlies Many Diseases. While occasional inflammation is a normal, healthy process, chronic inflammation can be devastating. Chronic inflammation is now being associated not just with asthma and arthritis, but also with ailments such as atherosclerosis, strokes, ulcers, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes and all types of degenerative diseases.
Astaxanthin for Joint Pain
Astaxanthin has been shown to be a very effective remedy for all types of joint pain, including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and joint soreness after strenuous exercise. Astaxanthin can help reduce pain and inflammation in tendons, joints and muscles.
A health survey of astaxanthin users showed that over 80 percent of those reporting back pain and symptoms from osteo- or rheumatoid arthritis reported an improvement after supplementing with astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin for Improved Athletic Performance
The benefits of astaxanthin for serious athletes are significant. Regular users report that supplementing with astaxanthin:
- increased strength and stamina
- reduced recovery time
- prevents joint and muscle soreness after exercise
- reduces lactic acid levels
Many competitive and endurance athletes have become believers in astaxanthin supplements for all of the above reasons.
Astaxanthin for Youthful, Beautiful Skin
One of the most frequently-reported benefits of astaxanthin is an improvement in skin quality. There is evidence that astaxanthin not only prevents UV sun damage from occurring, but may actually help to reverse external signs of aging from the inside out. This has been clearly demonstrated in human clinical trials.
Many users of astaxanthin supplements report that they are able to spend significantly more time out in the sun without burning than they were able to before. This is due to the powerful anti-inflammatory properties that astaxanthin has. (A sunburn is essentially an inflammation of your skin).
Dr. Nicholas Perricone, one of the world's leading antiaging experts, highly recommends astaxanthin for reducing wrinkles and age spots, improving moisture levels, elasticity and smoothness, and for giving your skin a beautiful, healthy glow.
Discover More About Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin benefits cover virtually the entire spectrum available from antioxidants. It's certainly one of the most important antioxidants you could add to your daily diet. You might even consider putting it at the top of your list — it's that powerful and versatile. Since the amounts you get from food sources are very limited — only about 2 mg. or less in a 4oz. serving of salmon — supplements are the only way to get the benefits that astaxanthin offers.
If you want to discover more about the amazing properties of astaxanthin supplements, you'll find them on my website at: Astaxanthin Benefits.
