Are You Eating Genetically-Modified (GM) Food?
Although the majority of Americans surveyed say that they would not buy genetically modified foods if they were labeled as such, the truth is that most of you are currently eating these foods on a daily basis without your knowledge.

already contain GM ingredients!
Virtually any non-organic food product containing soy, corn, canola oil and ingredients derived from these crops grown in the USA are genetically-modified. And the food industry is furiously lobbying to keep food from being properly labeled as containing GM ingredients
Aren't GM Foods Teated for Safety? Many consumers in the US mistakenly believe that the FDA approves GM foods through rigorous, in-depth, long-term studies. In reality, the agency has absolutely no safety testing requirements. Instead the agency relies on research from companies like Monsanto, research that is meticulously designed to avoid finding problems.
The overwhelming consensus among the FDA’s own scientists was that GM foods were quite different and could lead to unpredictable and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. The FDA scientists who had urged superiors to require long-term studies were ignored.
Why Grow GM Crops? You may have heard the FDA and food industry claims that genetically modified (GM) foods are safe and properly tested. They will tell you that genetically modified crops are needed to feed the increasing population or to survive the frequent droughts and floods brought on by climate change — but they're not. They're designed to sell more of Monsanto's patented Roundup-resistant seeds and pesticides, and take control of the global food supply.
A 2009 study showed that, over the last 13 years, Roundup Ready crops have increased herbicide use by 383 million pounds. In addition, once GM crops are planted in the open environment, they contaminate non-GM and organic varieties, as the seeds are spread by wind and foraging animals.
Eventually, you won't have a choice when
it comes to buying your food —
it will all be contaminated with GM technology.
Indian Farmers Ruined by GM Agriculture
What About Claims of Increased Yields and Bug-Resistant Crops? Every once in a while, you'll run across a heartwarming story about how GM crops are helping third-world farmers get higher yields, increase their income and improve their lives. Initially, GM technology does seem like a better alternative to traditional farming.
What you won't hear about are situations like the mass suicides among cotton farmers in India, farmers who were left destitute after being convinced to switch to genetically-modified farming. Through 2008, an estimated 125,000 Indian farmers have taken their own lives. 16,000 more suicides are still occurring every year as a result of the ruthless drive by Monsanto to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops. Many of the suicides are performed by consuming the insecticide the farmers purchased from Monsanto — a cruel irony.
What Happened to the Farmers in India? Indian cotton farmers were convinced by the government to change from traditional farming practices to GM technology. They had to borrow heavily in order to purchase Monsanto's seeds, which cost many times more than traditional ones. Monsanto seeds also produce plants that do not produce viable seeds of their own — they've been nicknamed "terminator" seeds.
Since there are no seeds to use for next year's crop, farmers have to purchase new seeds annually, as well as the herbicides and pesticides that go with them — more profit for the seed companies. But if the crops should ever fail, as they have in India, the farmer is left penniless and loses his land.
What is the Obama Administration's Position on GM Agriculture?
Barack Obama is unfortunately turning out to be just as pro-GMO as the preceding Bush and Clinton administrations, filling the USDA and other government bureaucracies with Monsanto supporters. Monsanto is the world's leader in GM technology.
The current USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, was named "Biotech Governor of the Year" in 2001. Vilsack, notorious for flying around in a Monsanto company jet during one of his previous election campaigns, is now busy trying to get the court-ordered ban on Roundup Ready alfalfa lifted.
